Saturday, May 3, 2025 — Group 1 of the R1 Compost Program held a compost distribution event to share the results of their collective composting work. The compost was originally prepared on December 21, 2024, and was harvested on April 26, 2025, after 125 days of decomposition. Out of the two compost beds they had prepared, one bed has matured and was distributed today, while the second bed still needs additional turning and some farmers have added extra materials independently to enhance the final outcome.
From today’s harvest, the mature compost bed yielded a total of 86 sacks, which were distributed among 12 group members. Each farmer received 7 sacks, although the original target was 10 sacks per person. This means there is a shortfall of 3 sacks per farmer, or 36 sacks in total.
Despite the gap from the target, the farmers expressed joy and pride in the results, especially Mr. Zakariya, who finally harvested compost alongside his group. Group 1, mostly composed of male farmers, reflected positively on the process—even joking about the hard work they put into mixing and turning the compost over the months.
Interestingly, today’s compost was delivered by vehicle directly to each farmer’s home. This not only made transportation easier, but some farmers even shared that they wanted to “show off” to their neighbors about their successful homemade compost—as a sign of pride and a real example of what collective effort can achieve.
