Pepper Planting at Mr. Alunda’s Farm – SH Tiram R1: Integrating Kelekak Rows and Layered Planting Design

Today, SpiceHub Tiram (SH Tiram) carried out a pepper planting activity at Mr. Alunda’s farm, as part of the R1 program. A total of 300 pepper seedlings in polybags were planted, all propagated independently by the farmers—highlighting the group’s self-sufficiency in seedling production.

A distinctive feature of this planting system is the placement of kelekak (protective tree rows), which are planted every four rows of pepper vines and also positioned between oil palm trees along the outer boundary of the plot. This layout forms a natural living fence that serves as shade, windbreak, and a regulator of the farm’s microclimate.

This approach reflects climate-smart agroforestry principles, where kelekak trees serve not only an ecological function but also help enhance structure and sustainability within the pepper cultivation system. It is expected that this planting model will increase productivity while improving plant resilience against climate shifts and land degradation.
